HYSPLIT newer version slower

HYSPLIT newer version slower

Hello,
I've recently upgraded from version 4.2 to version 5.4 and when running identical runs on the same computer I am seeing that version 5.4 is significantly slower than version 4.2. Is this expected and if not is there something in my Makefile that I should look at altering to speed up version 5.4?
