If you are using gaussian puffs with a 1 km resolution grid, your puffs are going to split very quickly reaching the maximum. Please check in your MESSAGE file to see if you have a warning telling you that the puff splitting has shut down. If that is the case I would recommend running 3 D particles.

You are getting the asterisks because of the formatting of that parameter in the MESSAGE file. Your run should be OK. When you run at very high spatial resolutions you will need a large number of particles.

OK, your runs are correct and you should not expect a smoothing effect when using more particles when you are showing the concentrations over a 7 order of magnitude range. The smoothing effect that you are getting with the Gaussian approach is just an artifact of using a function instead of a finite entity to describe the distribution of the pollutant.

Also, you are still getting a spotty answer because you have set your concentration vertical extension to 10 m. So, try increasing it to, say, 100 and you will get a smoother concentration field.
