In general if you are dealing with a release near the surface you will find that below the planetary boundary layer (PBL) the particles will be well mixed. Therefore, if you set your concentration height equal to or below the PBL height you can use a lower number of particles. Using 100 m will be a good choice. For daytime well mixed conditions you could increase that height to 500 to 1000 m.
