Using Archived Meteorology to Create a Stability Time-Series Over 72 Hours

Post by ABesser »

Hi,

I am fairly new to the world of HYSPLIT modeling. I am trying to make a Stability Time-Series plot for a 72-hour time range. I would like to use the HRRR (3 km, 1 hourly, U.S.) data, but this is packaged in 6 hour chunks. Is there any way to make this plot with the online platform? Or do I need to download HYSPLIT and run it on my local Mac?

Thank you,

Alexi

While the READY website allows you to plot a stability time-series using a HRRR archive file, it is limited to a 6-hour window. To generate a longer stability time-series, you can use the vmixing program included in the public version of HYSPLIT (or in the registered user version, as they are equivalent for vmixing). First, download ARL-formatted HRRR archive files for your timeframe of interest from https://www.ready.noaa.gov/archives.php. The vmixing program requires a HYSPLIT CONTROL file that can reference up to 12 meteorological files. Because each HRRR archive file covers 6 hours, a single run can generate up to 72 hours of data. The output from vmixing is an ASCII text file containing a single header line followed by hourly stability data. To create a time-series longer than 72 hours, you can combine the data from multiple output files.
