Expected Download Speeds from arlftp

Post by sajjan »

Hi,
I've been trying to download some NAM archive data from the ftp site but found my download speeds from the server are really slow (>400KB/s). My connection does not seem to be the issue as I've tried downloading the files both on wired connection on a remote hpc cluster as well as my personal wifi and got similar speeds.

I was wondering if this low speed is expected or is it due to the current HYSPLIT workshop using most of the bandwidth on arl's end? If it's the latter, should download speeds be back to normal when it's over?

Thank you,
Sajjan

It may be the workshop. Please try again in a day or two.

It's strange, I sometimes get downloads speeds lower than 400 kbps from arlftp, and sometimes, the speed is as expected, in the 4 to 8 mbps range. Is there a reason for that? Are there "rush hours" for the server I should avoid? This happened without fluctuations coming from my Internet access, of course.

Try to avoid roughly 07-10 UTC.

Okay, thanks! That's the morning shift where I live, I'll now handle that kind of business in the afternoon, then.
