How does hysplit account for the terrain heights and differences on ground (forests, lakes etc)?

HYSPLIT gets surface information from met. data, and uses default option if they are not available.
Files in bdyfiles diectory (LANDUSE.ASC, ROUGHLEN.ASC, TERRAIN.ASC) are ASCII files, and you can modify them if necessary.

Hi! Do I understand it right that these files in bdyfiles directory are read only in case the required data is missing in the met file? But how can I force HYSPLIT to read the modified terrain (e.g. TERRAIN.ASC) if the terrain variable is present in the met? What is the way?
