Convert ERA5 data to ARL data

Post by yaqiang »

The example script to convert ERA5 grib data to ARL formatted data for HYSPLIT input meteorological dataset.

Code: Select all

# Convert ERA5 GRIB data to ARL data

print 'GRIB data file has been opened...'

Comparing ERA5 data with converted ARL data. The two data array are not exactly consistant due to the lossy compression algorithm of ARL data format.

Code: Select all

ddir = 'D:/Temp/grib'
f_era5_3d = addfile(os.path.join(ddir, 'ERA5_2017.Aug22.3dpl.grib'))
w1 = f_era5_3d['Vertical_velocity_isobaric'][0,-1]
f = addfile(os.path.join(ddir, 'test_era5_grib-1.arl'))
vname = 'WWND'
w = f[vname][0,0]
w = w * 100

When comparing WWND (vertical velocity) and precip fields please take into account the DIFW (DIFR for precip) fields as well.
See below.
Let us know if this helps.

https://ready.arl.noaa.gov/hysplitusersguide/S141.htm

Starting with HYSPLIT (Revision 596) the optional field DIFF is recognized as the difference between the original data and the packed data: DIFF=ORIGINAL-PACKED. The effect of this is to increase the precision of variables that have this additional field. When the DIFF field is read by HYSPLIT, the values are added to the data field resulting in values closer to the original data. Currently only DIFW and DIFR (vertical velocity and precipitation) are recognized as valid DIFF fields.

Thanks for your information! I have tried adding DIFW as a variable in converted ARF data file and comparing WWND by adding DIFW values. DIFW still has lossy compression problem to reproduce exactly data values of origianl ERA5 data, but the result much improved.

Following are new scripts for converting and comparing dataset. Please let know that I have got right improvement that I can update MeteoInfo version online for users. Thanks again for your suggestion!
