vertical velocity

Post by cfouyang »

I regularly and frequently use hysplit for computing backward trajectory using GDAS1. It really helped a lot. However, I found the vertical velocity from GDAS1 magnified significantly between 2015 to mid-2017. This could lead to the trajectories which are quite different from usual. I would like to know (how) can this be fixed?

In addition, such anomaly are not shown if GDAS0.5 are used, and the vertical velocity are not provided by GDAS0.5 but calculated by hysplit. A study (doi:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2014.11.072) suggests that the calculated vertical velocities were quite smaller than GDAS1's. Large discrepancies are found between the GDAS datasets and observations. I wonder how to get more realistic trajectories.

Thanks.
