I've been trying to access the ftp://arlftp.arlhq.noaa.gov/archives/gdas1/ page for a few days, but without success. I need to download some gdas but I'm not getting it.

I just checked the ftp site and I was able to download a GDAS1 file using a computer outside NOAA network. Have you checked with your IT department about firewall settings that might be blocking your ftp access?

If you are using a web browser, there should be one more forward slash after the "ftp:" protocol specification. Try ftp:///arlftp.arlhq.noaa.gov/archives/gdas1/.
