Displaying data of a Meteorological file

Post by mstill »

Hi,

I'm using ECMWF ERA Interim, Daily data. I converted it to the format required by Hysplit using the GUI and now I want to check the converted file. So, using GUI, Meteorology -> Display Data -> Check file options gives me the following error:
Enter meteorological directory ...
Enter meteorological file name ...
ERROR metset: meteorological data time interval varies
Changed from 360 min to 720 min
At day/hr 1 18

More info:
Hysplit version svn:854
OS: Windows 8.1
Time Period of ERA Interim data set: October 1997.

Before running the model to calculate trajectories I want to check the ARL formatted data file which will be used by Hysplit. Any ideas on what's going wrong would be really helpful.

Thanks

How much data are you trying to convert at one time?
Please make sure the grib files that you are converting are less than 2 GB in size.
You may need to request the data in smaller time chunks. The default is usually a month
which will produce grib files which are too large for the converter program to handle.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi alicec,
My files were less than 1 Gb but the problem was with the time step of the forecast. That made the time in the surface file different file from the levels file. Interestingly, Hysplit didn't point out that during data conversion. Thanks for pointing out this 2 Gb restriction because the next file which I was gonna use had a size of more than that.

I'm glad that you were able to get it to work.
You are right - the converter utility program does not currently have
a lot of error catching in it. We may add some in future versions.
