Using Hysplit tools with older cdump files

Post by sarahw4 »

Hello, I'm new to Hysplit and am currently analysing data from previous Hysplit runs going back to 2011. However I'm having trouble getting the Hysplit tools concplot and con2stn working on any cdump files produced before June 2015 (I've successfully used these commands on cdump files that were produced after June 2015 to check that the commands themselves are ok). The errors I receive are:

For concplot:
*ERROR* coninp: unsupported packing option - 16777216
900

(I've also receievd this error when using a tool to convert cdump files to grib2 files).

For con2stn:
ERROR reading input file ... no records processed!
Warning: ieee_inexact is signaling
FORTRAN STOP

Looking into the top error in more detail, it looks like the CPACK variable (concentration data packing method) has been found to be 16777216 (which rather looks like the system memory limit or something similar) when it looks like it should be either 0 or 1.

So I was wondering if the cdump files changed around June 2015 (meaning that the correct CPACK value isn't being found) or if older files do not have this value?

Thanks for your help!

We have not changed the structure of the cdump files.
What is the version of the model you are using?

I have just tested cdump files that were created by a version back in 2013 and it works fine with the current and the old versions.

It's currently Revision 817 which we changed to in May 2016 (though when the older cdump files were produced it would have been using older versions).

As older cdump files are working fine for you, would it be possible to send you a sample cdump file that I have to check whether the file itself has problems/is corrupt?

Thank you for looking into this.

I've just tried to attach a cdump file, however it comes up with the message 'Invalid file extension' and won't let me attach it. So I've put two cdump files (one for 2013 and one for 2014) on the University of Hawaii Dropbox (link below) if you're able to use that?

Have you transferred the cdump files using ftp using the ascii command?

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand - are you talking about transferring the files onto the forum or about extracting data from the cdump files into a text file?

I am referring to all your files. Not only the ones you sent me. I am suspecting that your files got somehow corrupted.
