Backward trajectory for odour sources

Post by francitag »

I am a university researcher specializing in odor dispersion modeling.
I would like to ask if HYSPLIT could be used, in a reliable way, as a reverse model to simulate backward trajectory for short-range scale simulations, with simulation domains on the order of (or less than) 10 km.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thank you

The short answer is yes, it could be used that way.

For most applications one of the keys is to make sure the meteorological data which provides the wind fields to HYSPLIT is appropriate for the question you are trying to answer.
For your application, the HRRR with 3km horizontal resolution may work. If you are in an area of complex terrain or other complex meteorological conditions then you may need an even higher resolution meteorological data set. However if you are in an area without many terrain features and fairly simple wind flow patterns then a meteorological dataset with lower resolution like our 27 km WRF dataset may be fine.
