Can HYSPLIT read other forms of meteorological data?

Post by sonny.zinn »

[Note that the question and the answer below are recreated from a HYSPLIT FAQ site that predates this forum site. The original author and the posting date are unknown.]

HYSPLIT’s /data2arl directory contains several sample programs that can be used to convert meteorological data in various formats (ECMWF, NOAA GRIB, etc) into a format (we call it ARL packed) that Hysplit can process. It is up to you to provide data in ARL packed format. The program dat2arl.f found in the /data2arl/sample directory is a generic program not linked to any meteorological data format. It has some example data hardwired (through data statements) and it will produce an ARL packed data file. You can use it as a starting point to develop a program for data in your own format.
