The Vertical Component of Wind Field in NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis

Dear all,
I would like to know more about wind data in NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis.
I am aware that NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis includes the horizontal and vertical components of the three-dimensional wind field.
I am wondering what kind of data is actually recorded in the vertical component of the wind field.
Does NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis include the vertical wind speeds in both convective conditions (day) and non-convective conditions (night)?
For example, convective conditions: the velocity of convective thermals (updrafts) during daytime and non-convective conditions: the vertical wind velocity overnight without convective thermals.
Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Kind Regards,
Ming
