how to recognize the strong wind day and the week wind day from NAM file?

Post by niuniu »

Hi,sir,

I am do some research by using HYSPLIT. The time period is mainly from Aug. 29, 2013 to Oct.11,2013 .There is question that is how to recognize the strongest wind day and the most week wind day during this period from relevant NAM file. We still know nothing about the NAM file structure and also wonder whether there some tools to analyze NAM files.

Thank you very much.

You can use the Archived Meteorology section of our READY web site to plot windgrams, profiles and wind roses using archived gridded model data at:

On the websit ,http://www.ready.noaa.gov/READYamet.php, I want to print the meteorology profile for 2013-9-16, especially the wind speed , but there is no wind speed. I wonder how to get the wind speed on some day from NAM12KM file.

Many Thanks.

There are several products you can use to get the wind speed at any level and time:

1 - You can use the windgram from the Archived meteorology section of READY to plot the winds at all levels and view the resulting graphic and text file like the ones attached here to get the wind speed at any location and time.

2- You can also use the Meteorogram to get the wind speed at any height like the one attached

3 - use the sounding program to get a vertical profile of several parameters including wind speed

Through the windgram, I can get the wind direction and wind speed. There is another question, and how can I get the Friction velocity?

Thank you very much. :D

You can use meteorogram to get the friction velocity for meteorological data sets that have that field in them as the NAM 12 km does. If available it will be in the drop down list of fields to display.
