Model dust from salt lakes?

Post by arl.noaa »

Hello
Is it possible to model dust storm from a salt lake as a source (area:0.5 deg*0.25 deg) with advanced/PM10 dust storm emission algorithm?

Yes - the spacing of the potential dust locations in the CONTROL file is arbitrary and determined by the user. You just need to adjust area with each point so that the total area over all points represents the area of the lake.

You will also need to modify the emission rate since the dust emission module currently included in HYSPLIT is only based on desert dust and it might not be applicable for salt lakes.
