Problem with arw2arl or HYSPLIT?

Post by skjoth »

Hi all

We have been happy users of HYSPLIT and WRF for quite some time and have used it with GDAS data and WRF data
We have a 2 month library of daily WRF output files (March-April 2014) were we have problems with either HYSPLIT (registered windows version) or the arw2arl routine
The data from WRF are based on a long continuous set of WRF simulations by using a nudging technique. Data are stored as daily output files from WRF with 60 min temporal resolution (e.g. 01 March, 02 March,,.. 09 April, 10 April etc. ).

This is what we have done:
- We can run the arw2arl program on all data without error messages and produce data for HYSPLIT for all of March and April
- But we can not run HYSPLIT on any of the data from 11 of April and the rest of the month. Neither can the meteorological data from the 11 of April be displayed in HYSPLIT
- If we try to run a trajectory the 9th of April starting at 10 and 6 hours forwards, things go fine
- If we try to run a trajectory the 10th of April starting at 10 and 6 hours forwards, the model stops 1 hour before completion
- we can display meteorological data from the 10th of April using contour maps. As an example we can display all 24 fields with 2-meter temperature
- we can not display any meteorological data from the 11th of April. Here we just get an error message when we try to open the arl file
- We have compared the WRFDATA.CFG files from the 9th of April and the 10th of April and could not see any differences between the two files (see below)
- In the hysplit library 'c:\hysplit4\working' we have found a log file called "WARNING". This file contains following messages:
'WARNING: metini - initial 2 m TEMP missing'
'WARNING: metini - initial 10 m WIND missing'
But our input files appear to have both 2 meter temperature and 10 meter wind speed and we can display these met-data with HYSPLIT
-We have also tried to download and install the latest release of the registered HYSPLIT windows version and the latest release of arw2arl but this did not help
-Selected parameters from the all the WRF files have been animated over the 2 month period. Specific dates (e.g 09, 10, 11 April 2014) have been carefully investigated in all the 3D meteorological fields. No problems have been found and the meteorological model appear to perform very well.

We sincerely hope that someone has a good idea, what could be the problem.

The problem is that if the forecasting hour goes beyond 999 (about 40 days), then the format of the ARL file will be corrupted. We fixed that problem after version 590. Please download the latest version of arw2arl and that should take care of your problem.

Hi again

Thank you very much for the speedy reply

I have downloaded the latest version from the svn and recompiled it the program. It works fine now! :)
