api2arl more levels

Hello,
i am trying to convert ecmwf IFS data to arl. The api2arl converter works fine for 50 levels. My only problem is that I have 137 levels to convert and the max Value seems to be 50. When I try to change it in the api2arl_v4.f file I get invalid memory reference errors. Is there a proper was to change it?

There is also the issue that i only can convert just one timestep at a time. Is there a workaround?

I made some progress but encountered another problem.
I was able to change the api2arl file to accept more levels and the api2arl program is running without a error message.
My problem occurs when I try to calculate the back Trajectory (the forward one works ) There is just no output in the tdump file except for the header. also the file check gives no error.

Is there a need to change the conversion file for api2arl to make this work?

It seems odd that it would work with the forward trajectory and not the backward trajectory.

In your MESSAGE file you are getting the notice
NOTICE advpnt: trajectory above data domain

Where are you starting your trajectory from (particularly height)?
Please send CONTROL file.
Also can you please run try running profile program on your meteorological file.

thanks for your reply. I also wondered why its running in the forward direction. I checked again and noticed that even that there is no error the output makes no sense. The trajectory drops to 0 after the first step. i tried it for many heights from 1 to 10000 and its always the same. Also in the backwards traj the error message is always the same for different heights. It seems there is a problem in the conversion calculating the sigma or w-wind values.

Thanks Yaquiang. Yes - it looks like you do not have vertical velocity in your grib file.
You must have your api2arl configured so some other variable is being read in as vertical velocity and
HYSPLIT is using that which is giving you bad trajectories. You can set vertical motion method to 4 as Yaquiang suggested (isosigma).
You can also set it to 5 (from divergence) or one of the other methods as appropriate for your application.

Thank you for your answers.
The trajectories calculated without error when the vertical velocity was changed to isosigma. But now i am very concerned about the quality of the calculation.
I had another look at my Grib file. The parameter w - vertical wind speed is available and is probably somehow used in the conversion. Which parameters do in need in addition to make the model run with the model input data for the vertical velocity? or is there a need to change the api2arl.cfg file so that w is converted properly?

In the sample grib file you provided, I did not find vertical velocity. I only found the following fields:

I read your file using the python pygrib module which utilizes ECMWF grib_api. Maybe your other files have the vertical velocity?

Yes - you may need to edit the api2arl.cfg file. Please see the help for api2arl.cfg.
If you need additional help please provide your api2arl.cfg file and which version of api2arl you are using.

i found the error in the conversion. the conversion from "z" to "dz/dt" in the api2arl file just created errors (***) in the ARl file. after removing this parameter the conversion worked fine and i can now use the model data input for the trajectories.
