era52arl updated to new ERA5 format

Post by Charlie »

Hi everyone!

As you well know, ERA5 has been updated! And I need to know if the era52arl.f program still works with the ERA5 update. I would appreciate any information. Has anyone used era52arl to process ERA5 with its new format?

Best regards!

I have updated my original post to prevent confusion. The following is my present answer, while the original question is below.

Current answer
Hi Charlie,

I downloaded ERA5 data from the CDS-API at the end of January/start of February 2025, after the ERA5 format update. I successfully converted the .grib files into .arl format using both the HYSPLIT GUI and grib2arl.exe.
Although I encountered some initial challenges, I managed to resolve them.

I hope this answers your question.

Kind regards,
Jasper

Original answer
Hi Charlie,

I have been struggling to convert the API downloaded ERA5 .grib files into the .arl format for a few weeks now.
Unclear is it to me whether this has to do with the new ERA5 format or with the scripts I use.

I am able to convert the CDS-API downloaded data using the Hysplit GUI, but this becomes quite tedious for large multi-year datasets. However, when I try to convert the data (downloaded end of January/start of February 2025) using the grib2arl.exe or the era52arl.f script, I keep on receiving errors.

To be honest, I cannot say whether the conversion fails has to do with my scripting or with the new ERA5 data setup. From the start of using Python scripts to convert the data automatically I ran into problems. Currently my monitor is filled with command prompts, .f files and more Hysplit code, I am a bit out of my depth. Yet, the fact that the GUI works might give a clue whether the provided executables work on the new ERA5 format.

Kind regards,
Jasper
