Re: quality of the meteorological data
When a HYSPLIT trajectory fails there are several things you can do to determine why it failed. (1) If you are running it on a PC or linux, run it on the web and compare the CONTROL and SETUP.CFG files to yours (2) Run chk_file on the meteorology data. chk_file on the PC is in c:\hysplit4\exec if yo...

See the HYSPLIT Tutorial for information on trajectory error. There is a link near the bottom of this web page: http://www.ready.noaa.gov/HYSPLIT.php

Re: Problem with cluster analysis
You may get a more meaningful error message if you run the cluster program from the Windows Command Prompt. Make the INFILE. In the Command Prompt window (do a Windows search for "Command Prompt"), change directory (cd) to the cluster working directory. This will have the file, INFILE. Open Windows ...

Re: Converting GFS forecast files to ARL..data above 10mb
Sorry there is no tutorial. The program 'gfs2arl' in the HYSPLIT package converts one-degree GFS grib1 NCEP output to HYSPLIT-format. It should be relatively simple to add higher levels. The difficulty is that NCEP now outputs data in grib2 and the grib2 libraries are harder to work with. The NCEP u...

Was there are file 'MESSAGE' written when you ran the conversion program? If so, I'd like to see it.

Re: Problem with high resolution GFS data conversion
Try the program grib2arl. That is a more general program than the gfs2arl. The input must be in grib1 format, not grib2.

Re: No trajectories to cluster
Open the INFILE in Notepad and verify the files exist. Make sure your "hours to cluster" are less than or equal to 96 (and >0). See if in the cluster 'working' directory there is a file "CLUSTERno". That would list the trajectories not being clustered and presumably would be all of yours. Are your e...

Re: TPP6
At http://ready.arl.noaa.gov/READYflddesc.php it says TPP6 is 6-hour accumulated precipitation. TPP6 means there is a 6-hour accumulating 'bucket'. Imaging a bucket outside collecting rain. At 00z the bucket is empty. At 3 hours, you measure the depth, it is 1 inch. Then at 6 hours you measure again...
