Re: Question about volcanic emissions and HYSPLIT

HYSPLIT can run a backward trajectory starting at any height, as long as it is not higher than the model top. The model top is the vertical limit of the internal meteorological grid. It tells the model how much the calculation can go vertically. Usually, it is set no higher than the top of your met ...

Re: Chem02 error

Section 11.2 is about dry deposition and deals with 1 pollutant only. Please check your CONTROL file (or Setup menu) if you have the pollutant number to 2 from the previous section (11.1).
Or just click the rest before doing section 11.2.

Re: error in renaming while cleanup and error while opening default_conc

This issue may be solved by closing HYSPLIT and restarting it.

If the file is already opened, it cannot be deleted or opened by another program. That may cause the issue you encountered. So... close all the files opened by other programs, such as the txt files, HTML files, the MESSAGE file...etc.

Re: Meaning of the dramatically varying PBLH value

There is a parameter in SETUP.CFG to set a minimum mixing depth for HYSPLIT. You can use it to avoid the very low PBLH values from the met data file. The default is 150 m. You can set it to another value in the Advanced menu #7, in the "Mixed Layer Depth Computation", the box for "Default minimum (m...

Re: Meaning of the dramatically varying PBLH value

The profile generated in section 9.5 is in a 6-hr time interval. If you print out the profile hourly, you will see the diurnal variation of PBL height ( (pretty much depending on the surface temperature, and of course the surface characteristics). Its value can be low at night, a few hundred meters ...

Re: Dispersion within an urban area

In general, we need to increase particles in the simulation as going to a finer grid resolution for short-range (or say, urban scale) applications. This kind of scale is usually in a few kilometers or sub-kilometer resolution. Section 17.4 of the tutorial will discuss this. The tracer experiment in ...

Re: Height of levels - grid setup vs concentration setup

The "top of model" in the CONTROL file is the vertical limit of the internal meteorological grid. It tells the model how much the calculation can go vertically. (https://www.ready.noaa.gov/hysplitusersguide/S262.htm) The grid setup is for computing the concentration. If you set it to 5000 m, the mod...

Re: Use of a customized netcdf file in HYPSLIT

The description of the met data in HYSPLIT required format is available in the user's guide: https://www.ready.noaa.gov/documents/Tutorial/html/meteo_cnvrt.html. Go to the TABLE of CONTENTS, and find Meteorology/Help/ARL Data Format WRF-ARW met data are in Netcdf format. You can follow the converter...

Re: How to run hysplit on linux without going through GUI

You can run HYSPLIT with LINUX scripting. Section 2.4 of the HYSPILT tutorial talks about this => https://www.ready.noaa.gov/documents/Tutorial_2021/html/test_batch.html There are script examples for many tutorial sections that you can take and customize for your applications. The script for traject...
