Unfortunately that is correct. We occasionally have communication issues that can cause these missing cycles and NCEP does not archive these sigma level files. You should be able to use the NAMS CONUS file as it is hourly at 12 km to fill in that one time period. You can find it at: ftp://arlftp.arl...

The current NOAA smoke forecasts are available from the National Weather Service at: https://airquality.weather.gov/ Choose the surface or column total PM2.5 forecast and then you can zoom in by clicking on the map. From that message, it looks like you do not have permission to write to the working directory of HYSPLIT. Check in the Advanced/Configuration Setup/Set Directories submenu for what is defined as the "Working directory" and make sure you have permission to write there.

As can occasionally happen, we had a bad meteorological file at 12 UTC on December 18, which caused the model to crash. We removed that file so your calculation will work up to 12 UTC on December 18.
