Re: Area source vs point source

The area is just used in the computation of the emission amount. The shape doesn't matter in 3D particle mode ... all releases are point sources.

Re: Trajectories stop after 24 hours

In order for us to diagnose the problem we need the CONTROL and SETUP.CFG files and the MESSAGE file if available. If running this on the website, send us the Job ID.

Re: Download size of meteorological data?

The meteorological forecast data, which can be downloaded from NCEP at (for example, today): ftp://ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/hysplit/prod/hysplit.20120826/ can range in size from 20 MB to 2.6GB depending on which data set you choose. PC HYSPLIT is updated a few times per year and it is sug...

Re: Clustering memory limit?

Hello, Yes, it is a memory issue. We haven't used this cluster program on more than about 1000 trajectories. The limit will depend on your particular PC, but we don't have a simple way to calculate that limit. Try to reduce the number of trajectories and/or number of endpoints along the trajectory t...

Re: Error starting HYSPLIT

It looks like you did not first download and install the Graphical Utilities programs. These programs are needed to be able to run the TCL scripts and display the graphics. You can download the utilities programs from the following location (you shouldn't need to reinstall HYSPLIT): http://www.ready...

Re: Instructions on how to use model?

The first thing we would recommend is that you go through the online training that we posted following our last PC HYSPLIT Workshop. You can find this information on the link for the June 2012 workshop at: http://www.arl.noaa.gov/HYSPLIT_workshop.php This training will instruct you on how to install...

Re: Is model terrain following?

Yes, the model vertical grid coordinate is terrain following, however, the terrain comes from the meteorological data set you are using and since you are using the coarse NCEP/NCAR Re-analysis data the resolution is only 2.5 degrees or about 275 km. Therefore, you will not be resolving much in the w...

Re: What are the minimum fields needed for HYSPLIT?

HYSPLIT requires at a minimum, u,v,& w wind components, temperature, surface pressure, and height if on pressure surfaces in three dimensions (relative humidity or specific humidty are optional). You can find more information on the meteorological data in our workshop tutorials at: http://www.arl.noaa...

Re: Error entering user-entered meteorology data

The meteorology files are written as direct access, so if you write a file with fewer time periods on top of a longer file, the additional records of the old file will remain. It is a feature rather than a bug permitting us to update individual records. However, as you point out, an automatic delete...
