To have HYSPLIT simulate convection when CAPE exceeds a certain threshold, set CAPEMIN to a value larger than zero. You will first need to download forecast ARL met files, which can be downloaded to your machine from: ftp.arl.noaa.gov/pub/forecast
Then you can load these files into HYSPLIT using the Add Meteorology Files button you circled in the attachment.

Please try running the batch/bash script. If you are using Windows, this involves double clicking on cust_smoke.bat in the Tutorial/batch subdirectory.

You may also want to try hitting reset, restart HYSPLIT, and/or cleanup your working directory.

Let us know if you had any problems with this after restarting again. Our guess is that you missed a setting described in the tutorial.
