Re: Hysplit output quality
Could you provide more information on what the reviewers were objecting to? Sometimes they have an issue with the resolution of the meteorological data used. This technical paper describes the method of computing trajectories. https://www.arl.noaa.gov/documents/reports/MetMag.pdf The integration tim...

Re: WARNING metpos: off spatial domain of all grids
Those messages indicate that the computational particle position is not within the domain of any of the meteorological grids that you specified in the control file (yours looks to be 20230118ARL). If a particle is off the meteorological grids, then HYSPLIT will remove it from the simulation. The dea...

Re: Default SETUP.CFG namelist file parameters
MHRS, TOUT are only pertinent to the trajectory runs and have no meaning for a dispersion run. Therefore the defaults may be different - e.g. 0. KWET - Thanks for pointing out the discrepancy between the descriptions. There is an error in the Namelist variable section. https://www.ready.noaa.gov/hy...

Re: Data Inputs needed for Smoke Concentration
You need emissions data. You can specify complex emissions scenarios using an EMIT-TIMES file. https://www.ready.noaa.gov/documents/Tutorial/html/cust_emit.html HYSPLIT currently has three plume-rise options (see PLRISE in SETUP.CFG and https://acp.copernicus.org/articles/23/3083/2023/) https://www....

Could you provide more information.
In particular it would be nice to see your CONTROL file for the run and also whether you are running
trajectory or dispersion. What is in the resulting table?

Re: Backward trajectory for odour sources
The short answer is yes, it could be used that way. For most applications one of the keys is to make sure the meteorological data which provides the wind fields to HYSPLIT is appropriate for the question you are trying to answer. For your application, the HRRR with 3km horizontal resolution may work...

Re: Running decades using ERA5 ?
Was it the downloading time that was the problem? The conversion itself should be pretty fast. Unfortunately I'm not sure of how to solve the problem of long download times. I think there are various ways you can try to subset the data to make it faster. https://confluence.ecmwf.int/display/CKB/How+...

Re: executing HYSPLIT parallel
There are a few things that can help with executing multiple hysplit runs at the same time. 1. you can name your CONTROL and SETUP.CFG files with a suffix - CONTROL.suffix1 SETUP.suffix1, CONTROL.suffix2 SETUP.suffix2. Then you call the hysplit executable with (example shell scrip) /hysplit/exec/hyt...

Re: Pollutant Concentration
There are a good number of ways HYSPLIT can be utilized to model air pollutants which depends on what question you are trying to answer, what data you have regarding measurements and emissions estimates and so forth. I suggest using a literature search tool such as web of science and searching for s...
